Epping Model Railway Exhibition 2008

Today I took my son to the Epping Model Railway Exhibition Railway Exhibition, which has been running over the long weekend. We tried for today as the crowds were smaller, for most of the weekend had been quite large in attendance.

This year saw more layouts and stalls then any year previous.

Main Hall 2

Ticket price for old was quite cheap entertainment, considering my son got in for free being under 5.

The detail and effort being put in the dioramas is getting better and the techniques easier. Some new layout had used these techniques and made some really life like displays.

The newer make of engines now come with their own sound and engine noise. Also the new engines are controlled digitally via a handset. This means the whole track will be live and the train will only move if the control box contains the signature of the train. This makes the displays very life like as you can run two trains on the same line without interference.

This year (as always) the ‘Thomas the Tank Engine: ride on engine was there. My son loves this most of all. The Epping Model Railway Club also had a setup for kids to use with Thomas the Tank Engine trains on it.

These events attract enthusiasts or just people who have a small interest.

This is one of the events on my calendar every year. Can’t wait till the next one.

  • This is a great way to encourage and grow the pastime of Model Railroading. I have learned so much about this hobby and seeing the enjoyment that it brings around the world. I started out as a child with just a Lionel train set, however I see there is a wide variety of model trains, scales, niches and sub niches.

Thanks for the pictures, it really looked like a fun time.

  • I think, it’s true what you say

  • Really Interesting. Thanks for the Info. I love your site.

  • This was an extremely great go through I adore articles like this and I’ve bookmarked this site to examine back.

  • Loved the photos… I also love taking my boy to the local model train conventions… great way to spend the day .

  • This looked like a really good show. I have been a model railroder for more than 34 years and I never stop learning. The great thing about model railroading is the variety the hobby has to offer. Everything from the technical side (like track planning), electronics (like wiring), the creative side (like scenery), woodworking (like building structures), and the fun side (train operation). Although in saying that it is all fun and certainly challenging at times.

  • The Epping Model Railway Exhibition looks worth a visit next time its on. I’ve been involved in model railways for two decades now. I like finding sites like this one that I never discovered before. I get really involved in the hobby and my wife always knows where to find me, but my model train layout keeps me young and out of trouble.
